Thinking about coming to an event…but nervous to show up alone? This is for you.
Coming to an event alone can feel a little awkward at first… but you might be surprised how many other people showed up solo too. Whether it’s DJ Coffee Club, a Dance Walk, Nerd Nite, Braids & Brews, Speed Friending, or Plates & Mates, you don’t need a built-in buddy to come have a good time. Use these helpful tips to feel more confident going to you next event solo.
1. Solo is a great way to meet people
If your goal is new friends or community, coming alone can actually help. You’re more open, more approachable, and more likely to start conversations at things like Speed Friending, DJ Coffee Club, or Nerd Nite.
2. Show up a little early
Getting there before the crowd builds makes everything easier. You can settle in, get familiar with the space, and start chatting before everyone is deep in conversation.
3. Let the host know you came solo
Our hosts are there to make people feel welcome. If you came by yourself, say hi. We’re happy to point you in the right direction and help you feel more comfortable jumping in.
4. Give yourself a simple goal
Try one of these: say hi to 3 people, stay for the full event, join one conversation first
Small goals make solo events feel way less intimidating.
5. Pick the event that feels most natural to you
Want something social and easygoing? Try Nerd Nite or Braids and Brews.
Want built-in interaction? Try Speed Friending or Plates and Mates.
Want something active? DJ Coffee Club and Dance Walks are perfect.
There’s no one right way to show up! Just as long as you do.
6. Remember: everyone came for connection
People come to Find Fun Indy events to meet others, try something new, and be part of the community. You are not the only one hoping to make a new friend.
No one to bring? Come anyway. Your next friend, favorite event, or new little community moment could start with showing up solo.
Come alone. Leave with friends.
